Compare two PDF documents

When a contract comes back from the other side, or a report reaches its fourth draft, the question is always the same: what actually changed? Reading both documents side by side is slow and unreliable — small edits are exactly the ones the eye skips.

This tool extracts the text of both files and compares them line by line, then produces a colour-coded report: removed lines in red, added lines in green, unchanged lines in grey for context. Both documents are read on your own device, which matters when the thing being compared is a contract.

  1. Select exactly two PDFs — the original first, then the revised version.
  2. Press "Compare documents".
  3. Open the downloaded HTML report to see every change, grouped by page.

Frequently asked questions

Does it compare images and layout too?

No, it compares text. A change in font, spacing, or an image will not be reported. For text documents — contracts, reports, policies — that is usually what you actually want to know.

What if the documents are scans?

Scans have no text layer, so there is nothing to compare. Run OCR on both first, then compare the results.

How are moved paragraphs handled?

A block that moved shows as a removal in its old position and an addition in its new one, because line-level comparison cannot tell a move from a delete-and-retype.

Does page count have to match?

No. Pages are compared in order and any extra pages in either file show up as pure additions or removals.
